America... The Beautiful

In honor of the Olympics coming to an end I thought it as only fitting to bring you Julep America. America is also know as America -The Beautiful. Per Julep America -The Beautiful, "is a shiny red with royal blue glitter and sterling silver stars, it's like nail art in a bottle!"

America -The Beautiful is a lovely mix of red and blue with silver. Suprisingly, America has some star glitters. I loved that idea. I love it on my nails.

America was a little goopy, but manageable. Here's American -The Beautiful.

Congrats to all of the members of Team USA!!

Did you guys enjoy the Olympics this year? What is your favorite Olympic Sport to watch?

Thanks for reading,

Takeover Thursday: Kat from Diary of A Phat Kat

Hello everyone!

I would just like to give a big Thanks to Tamala at Tall Girl In Heels for allowing me to do a guest blog for her. I very much appreciate this!

My name is Kat, or as my followers know me, PHAT Kat. I have been doing my nails since I was about 5 years old when I got my first nail polish which was a peel off! Since then I have experimented and loved doing nails.

I started my beauty blog Diary Of A PHAT Kat this past January. After receiving a lot of encouragement from readers, I decided to stick with it and am now posting regularily on my blog as well I am now a beauty writer for www.dailyglow.com  (you can find links to my articles on my blog).

I would like to share with you a tutorial for Fruit Salad Nails that uses a product called Fimo Canes.

Fimo Canes are polymer clay that have been molded into designs like butterflies, fruit, animals, shapes etc. They come in 5cm long sticks and can be sliced very thinly with a razor which are then applied to the nail to create detailed nail art. They can also be applied to picture frames, cell phones and other items or used in crafts. I purchased mine off of eBay for $5 CDN!!!

I selected a few fruit canes: watermelon, lime, lemon, oranges, strawberry, apple and kiwi.

My Husband lent my his utility knife so I used that to thinly slice the canes. I have to emphasize the word thinly because if you cut them too thick, they are harder to stick and will also be raised quite a bit on the nail.

In the picture above, the slice is too thick. It needs to be about half that size. It is tricky to slice it at first but you get the hang of it quite fast!

I  made sure to buffer each nail so that were no rough edges, for better adhesive. I applied a bottom coat and let dry. I then applied a drop of top coat to the spot on my nail where I wanted to apply the cane slice. I did this every time until my nails were complete. I finished with a top coat over the entire nail and that was all it took to achieve these Fruit Salad Nails.

These took about 1 hour, including drying time. I didn’t stick to a pattern with the cane slices and placed different designs on each nail.
Voila! Fruit Salad Nails!!!
You can find me at:

Thank you so much for reading my tutorial and thanks again to Tall Girl In Heels!!!

Kat Thank you so much for participating in Takeover Thursday. Your post was great. Guys be sure to follow Kat on her blog and social media.

August Julep Maven box!

This month I wasn't very happy with the Selection of my normal Julep maven box. I'm usually an It Girl, but I wanted the remover that was offered in the other boxes. The remover and the pump caught my eye! I ended up getting the Boho Glam box.

The theme of the Julep boxes for August was Metallics and Chromes. I'm really not a fan of these polishes, but I wanted the remover and decided not to skip the month. I, also, couldn't pass up a pretty blue polish. I added Melanie from the It Girl box as an add-on for $4.99.

What I got in my box:

Julep Reusable tote, Melanie, Isla, Piper and
Julep Acetone Free Conditioning Nail Polish Remover

The Bag:
"Beauty is about connection. Not competition."

A closer look at Melanie, Isla and Piper

Julep Acetone Free Conditioning
Nail Polish Remover with pump

This is what I received from my Maven box for August. I will review these items in a later post.

Dr.'s Remedy Summer Collection

"Dr.'s Remedy is a line of doctor inspired cosmetics that is dedicated to using clean, hypoallergenic ingredients. Enriched with naturally occurring anti-fugal ingredients like tea tree oil, garlic bulb extract, vitamins C and E, wheat protein. Dr.'s Remedy Enriched Nail Polish is free from harsh toxins to promote healthier, stronger nails and the first ever nail polish on the market approved by the American Podiatric Medical Association."

Dr.'s Remedy Summer Collection includes three colors: GRATEFUL Grape, HOPEFUL Hot Pink and YOUTHFUL Yellow.

                                                        GRATEFUL Grape:

"Move Over Jolly Rancher, this take on grape has sizzle, shine and a touch of shimmer." The previous statement is how Dr.'s Remedy describes GRATEFUL Grape.

GRATEFUL Grape had great application. and you can easily get away with one coat on this one. The polish was very pigmented. I only did two coats to show you guys. I really love this color. It is a grape-grape and had tiny pink shimmer. It's so cute!

                                HOPEFUL Hot Pink:
"Hello Kitty never had it so good; this shade of pink is every gal's new best pal, no doubt," say Dr.'s Remedy about HOPEFUL Hot Pink.

I really liked this color. It applied well and the formula was perfect. I have nothing bad to say about this polish. The only thing is I have several polishes this color :-(

                                       YOUTHFUL Yellow
"A hue of banana-meets-lemon with here-comes-the-sun subtlety, this shade is matte, marvelous and magical."

YOUTHFUL Yellow is a great yellow, if you like yellows. I'm not a fan of yellow polishes because it doesn't look right on my skin. YOUTHFUL Yellow is streaky on the first coat, but once you add the second coat it turns out great! If you like Yellow it is a great polish to have!

Dr.'s Remedy has a complete wardrobe of colors available. They retail for $17! They can be purchased online at here or by calling 1-877-323-NAIL.

Jelly Sandwich Example Ft. Frida

I've always wanted to do a jelly sandwich, but never really succeeded. I've been thinking of ways to do one and finally decided to use Zoya Frida as my jelly and 365 Days of Color Explosion and Nicole by OPI Rainbow in the S-Kylie as the glitters.

Today, I'm just gonna post a couple of pictures of how I did this jelly sandwich. I started with one layer of Frida on my ring finger and pinky finger. I then polished one layer of  365 Days of Color Explosion on my ring finger and Nicole by OPI Rainbow in the S-Kylie on my pinky. I finished with a layer of Zoya Frida.

This was something quick I decided to do so, I only did a two finger swatch and the fingers are different.

Take a look at these pictures:

(365 Days of Color Explosion on ring finger and
Nicole by OPI Rainbow in the S-Kylie on pinky)

I really like the look of this. I will definitely plan on doing more of these in the future. I will post other blog post with a full mani. I just wanted to show you guys some thoughts that were in my head of great Jelly sandwich combinations.

What do you think of these two options?

(Zoya Gloss collection is where you will find Frida click here. Explosion can be found here.)

Fun Freestyle Friday: Soda Stream!!

"Making carbonated water and soft drinks is simple! Turn tap water into sparkling water in under 30 seconds, with no clean-up. Enjoy the freshness and convenience of homemade soda and protect the environment at the same time. No heavy bottles to carry, store at home or throw away. Fizz to your taste and add the flavor of your choice to make your favorite drink. Simple to clean and reuse. With a variety of colors and silhouettes, you'll be sure to find a soda maker to match with any decor."

Cold water, Soda Stream machine, Soda Stream Cola

I know you guys have seen the commercials about Soda Stream, right? Well, if not I'm here to tell you about this wonderful product! First, everything here is our opinion and what we found works best for us. The Soda Stream does come with directions, but we've been testing it out for a little over a month and we have tweaked things to fit our tastes and comfort.

This is the side of the Soda Stream where the CO2 Carbonator is housed.

Step 1: Fill water bottle with water to the fill line and screw on to the Soda Stream machine.

Step 2: Press the grey button on the top to give the water carbonation (as shown below). According to Soda Stream's directions, give 3 loud buzzes, but we found four loud buzzes work best for us.

Step 3: Remove carbonated water from Soda Stream machine.

Step 4: Pour Cola in Measuring cap and add to the carbonated water.

(Hint: we found that it is best to use cold ingredients. They tend to work better together, especially when mixing. If you add warm ingredients we experienced a big fizzy build up. It was eliminated when both the water and the soda were cold.)

Step 5: Once you pour the Cola into the water slowly mix the cola and water by gently moving the bottle back and forth. DO NOT SHAKE THE BOTTLE!!

We allowed the ingredients to sit for a little while because once they settle the Soda tastes better. In our opinion, it is better this way. It tastes like a true Cola and not a "mixture" you just made. I hope this makes sense to you guys.

The finished product!

In a glass :-)

I can honestly say that I love Soda Stream. It is so easy and tastes great. When I tell people I have a Soda Stream, they tend to turn up their noses and say, "Ewww, is it good?" and my response is, "here, taste this!" Of course, they like it just as much as we do. My husband has taken it over and loves it too (his hands in the photos :-). )

This is a wonderful product and I would advise people to get one. It definitely rivals any of the well known brands out there. Soda Streams doesn't just make Soda/pop, you can also make sparkling water with lots of flavors to choose from, lemonades and energy drinks!! You can even make your own custom flavor.

Visit Soda Stream here for nutritional comparisons and check out how they are environmentally friendly!!

Soda Stream has several retailers that sell this product. You can visit SodaStream for more information. They are also on Facebook!!

Takeover Thursday: Rainy Days

Today is Takeover Thursday! The blog today has been taken over by Rainy From RainyDays79  Check out her post below. Thank you Rainy!!

Ombre Dots...

Hi everyone! You can call me Rainy! First off I would like to thanks Tall Girl in Heels for letting me do a guest blog post for her! This is my first one ever! I will start off by telling you all alittle bit about myself. I started collecting polish in 2010. Before that I would just paint my nails and not really think to much! I can't bare to remember those days when I didn't use a base coat or a top coat and I had no idea what a cuticle was! My first real jump into the nail art world was when I joined Youtube to share tutorials of my nail art, I also began to search for nail art ideas. (You can find my Youtube channel here!).

I then began to branch out into other forms of sharing and getting ideas for nail art. I joined the blogging community in March 2012. I try and post at least every other day to get my blog out there. (Click here to go to my blog.) Then my lastest new thing was joining Pinterest after hearing all about it from friends, the news etc. (You can find my Pinterest here.) So that is about it. If you want to know alittle more about me or my blog please email me at rainyd79@gmail.com

Onto the NOTD:

Here is the nail design! Ombre Dots! I really love how this turned out! These nails were inspired by this blog.  My favorite nail would probably be the blue or green because not only am I in love with those two colors I think the ombre turned out best of those nails. The yellow ombre nail turned out well to but I dont like yellow as much. With the pink there are basically two rows of the same color. :(

I used these paints to do the nail design. I would take the dark color use that for the first row, then add white, and then add white again. For the last row I would use the light color that I had in a bottle. On the thumb you could have an orange ombre but I dont have any orange and when I tried to make it, it was a fail so I used Nails Inc. Pudding Lane and just applied that to the whole thumb nail.

That is all I have to say today! Again, I would like to thank Tall Girl in Heels for letting me do a guest blog post! ~Rainy.

Great Ombre Dotticure! I would've never thought to do that. It's so creative. Don't forget to follow Rainy through the links provided.

Turned Up Turquoise by China Glaze

In all honesty, I think this color should be called Turned up Teal and not Turned Up Turquoise. It is definitely more teal than turquoise. I like this color and to my surprise it dried with a matte finish. I got this from Copious for a PENNY!! (If you want to sign up and receive and $10 credit use my link here and it will be applied.)

In yesterday's post Matte vs Matte, I stated that I had never used a matte before so imagine my surprise today when Turned Up Turquoise dried as a matte. It was a nice surprise, but like with other matte finishes adding your favorite top coat will make matte shine :-). I didn't make China Glaze Turned up Turquoise into a shiny polish though.

I found the polish very difficult to photograph. On some pictures Turned Up Turquoise looks like a mint colored polish and then on others it looks blue. This is not the case. The color is more of a teal-turquoise. It's more green than blue and very bright! Always a good thing for the summer. I tried several different lighting options and still couldn't get a true to life color.

Artificial light and no flash

natural light and flash

natural light and no flash

This color gave me the BLUES because I couldn't get the correct color in my pictures to show you guys. I still wanted to share this with you even though the color is waaaaaay off.

Here's a comparison with OPI Fly and China Glaze Aquadellic:

Fly, Turned Up Turquoise, Aquadellic

Do you have Turned Up Turquoise? Do you like Matte finishes? Please Share your opinions.

Thanks for reading,
xoxo -Tamala

(Turned Up Turquoise was purchased by me and all opinions are my own. I wasn't paid for this review)
